Gas is the pricing mechanism used on certain blockchain networks, most notably Ethereum, to measure the cost of computing resources required to execute operations. It is not paid in fiat-currency but in the network's native cryptocurrency (e.g., Ether or ETH). The concept of Gas exists to prevent network spam and to allocate limited computing resources fairly among users.

Why Gas is Necessary on the Blockchain

Every operation on a blockchain, from sending a simple transaction to deploying or interacting with a complex smart-contract, requires a certain amount of computational effort. This effort must be carried out by network participants, often called miners or validators. Gas acts as the incentive for these individuals to dedicate their computing power to secure the network and validate transactions. Without this fee, the network would quickly become unusable due to malicious users submitting an infinite number of unnecessary transactions.

The total Gas fee for a transaction is calculated by multiplying the Gas Limit (the maximum amount of Gas a user is willing to spend on an operation) by the Gas Price (the price per unit of Gas, often measured in Gwei). Users can influence the speed of their transactions by setting a higher Gas Price; during periods of high network congestion, users must offer a higher price to encourage miners to prioritize their operation over others. This dynamic pricing model ensures that the network remains functional and secure, balancing demand against available resources.
